Community resiliency will be enhanced by increasing community governance, leadership, and empowerment; and by providing the environmental, physical, and mental health benefits of green spaces within the community. Our expectation is that this project will provide the City with a model of community development that decreases rather than increases the risk of gentrification.
Durham City Council Resolution Recognizing Merrick-Moore as a Durham Heritage Community
We’re honored to share that the Merrick-Moore Community has been named the first Black Legacy Community by the City of Durham’s Heritage Communities project! This milestone celebrates the neighborhood’s rich history and lasting contributions to our city.
Thanks to months of research, interviews, and community collaboration, a historic marker now stands in Merrick-Moore, preserving the stories and legacy of this remarkable neighborhood for generations to come. You can see the marker on-site at Mount Zoar Baptist Church.

One of MMCDC’s goals is to preserve the history of the Merrick-Moore community and its residents and pass it along to upcoming generations. This will provide the entire Durham community with a better understanding of MMCDC’s mission of protecting the legacy of our ancestors, and their experiences that led to an undeniable impact on Durham, which will never be forgotten.
We’re seeking to connect with current and former Merrick-Moore residents to share their stories and memories from living in the community. This will include (depending on which option is best for the participant) video recordings, audio recordings, and/or sharing photos and documents.
