Developments at Merrick-Moore Park:
A Hub for Community Recreation

Big things are happening at Merrick-Moore Park! The park is expanding with new features that will bring more recreation and community space to the area.

Wheels Skate Park is officially open! This new skate space is part of the transformation of the former Wheels Fun Park, which the City of Durham purchased in 2021. The opening was a massive moment for the community, and MMCDC’s Executive Director, Bonita Green, was honored to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony. With plenty of space to ride and practice, it’s an excellent addition for the skating community.

An Aquatics Park is in the Works

Another significant addition coming to Merrick-Moore Park is a brand-new aquatics center! With an $85 million bond approved in November 2024, the city is working on plans for a state-of-the-art water park with:

  • Zero-depth entry pools
  • A lazy river
  • Recreational swimming areas for all ages

The design phase kicks off in spring 2025, with construction starting in fall 2026 and an expected grand opening in summer 2028

More Playgrounds, Art, and Green Spaces

On top of the skate park and water park, the city is planning to add more playgrounds, art sculptures, and walking trails to the Merrick-Moore Park area. These additions will create even more opportunities for families to spend time outside, connect with nature, and enjoy a vibrant community space.

MMCDC is Excited for What’s Ahead

The Merrick-Moore Community Development Corporation (MMCDC) is excited to see these improvements unfold and continues working with the city and residents to help shape the future of this park.

We’ll keep you posted as things progress—stay tuned for more updates!
